4.1 Menu, Tool Bar and Status Bar

(All) denontes that the operation will be applied to all sniffers or replayers if the shift key is held down while the operation is selected (but note that, for this to work on the menu, the shift key must be pressed before the menu is traversed - this is a bug).

The Monitor Menu

The Monitor menu contains common operations relating to the creation, deletion and execution of sniffers, and replaying log files. Note that most of these operations are also available on the toolbar.

•  New Sniffer
  This creates a new sniffer. The new sniffer will be named Sniffer N where is a number that distinguishes it from all other sniffers, however this can be changed if desired. The new sniffer starts with a default, essentially empty, configuration.
•  New Replay
  This creates a new replayer that can be used to replay an earlier binary log file. The new replayer is named Replay N in a similar manner to a new sniffer. The replayer also starts with an essentially empty configuration.
•  Close
  The currently selected sniffer or replayer is closed. This will stop any activity associated with the monitor or replay object, particulary an active packet filter.
•  Run (all)
  (All) sniffers and replayers that are not currently running are started. That is, sniffers will start to monitor the network, while replayers will start replaying their associated log files. Note that individual sniffers and replayers can be controlled from their configuration windows.
•  Halt (all)
  (All) running sniffers and replayers are stopped. In the case of sniffers, packet capture and filtering is stopped.
•  Freeze (all)
  The freeze operation freezes the graphic and packet displays for (all) active sniffers and replayers. Note that the monitoring or replay continues, so that when they are resumed the graphic and packet display will immediately advance to the current time.
•  Resume (all)
  This function resumes (all) frozen sniffers and replayers, as described above.
• Save
  The save function saves the configuration of all sniffers, to be reloaded the next time that KSnuffle is started. Note, however, that when KSnuffle is next started, the sniffers are all stopped, irrespective of their state at the time of the Save. Also, no information is saved for extant replayers.
• Save and Exit
  Configuration information is saved as above, and the program exits.
• Exit
  The program exits without saving any configuration information.

The View Menu

• Toolbar
  This item toggles the display of the tool bar.
• Statusbar
  This item toggles the display of the status bar.
•  Configuration
  Each sniffer or replayer has three display pages, for configuration, graphic load display, and packet display. This item selects the configuration page. Note that if the parallel graph or global setup page is on display, then display switches back to the sniffer or replayer.
• Event Triggers
  Display the event trigger page, similarly to the configuration above.
•  Graphic
  Display the graphic page, similarly to the configuration above.
•  Packet
  Display the packet display, similarly to the configuration above.
• Sniffers
  Display the currently selected sniffer or replayer.
•  Parallel
  Use this item to display a page which contains up to four parallel load histograms, allowing visual comparisom of network loading for different packet filtering settings.
•  Setup
  The setup page contains various global setup options. In addition, if the KSnuffle is being executed by root, the page allows users to be added to, or removed from, the list of non-root users who can use KSnuffle (note that this alson requires KSnuffle to be installed setuid-root).

At the bottom of the view menu will appear entries for each sniffer or replayer currently in existence. Selecting one of these will display the corresponding monitor.

The Tool Bar

As well as various shortcut buttons corresponding to menu functions, the toolbar also contains a combobox which can be used to select between current sniffers and replayers.

For the Run, Halt, Freeze amd Resume buttons, the shift key applies the operation to all sniffers and replayers, as for the corresponding menu items.
