Vine Linux is a Linux distribution with highly customized Japanese environment.

Features of Vine Linux 2.1

Based on Red Hat Linux 6.2

Vine Linux 2.1 is developed based on the Red Hat Linux 6.2 which is a popular distribution in USA. Many commercial applications are developed on Red Hat Linux, so they also work on Vine Linux.

Japanese Applications

Many applications supporting Kanji-Strings are involved and they work just after installation.

Window Maker is a standard window manager on Vine Linux. The menus and docks are customized for Vine Linux and many applications start up by a mouse click of the menus and docks.

You can choose FreeWnn (or Wnn6 for CR version) or Canna as a Kanji input method by the menu of display manager wdm.

GNOME

GNOME is prepared for users who prefer GUI based user environment. Of course Vine Linux works without GNOME when HD space is limitted. KDE is also available from additional packages, Vine Plus.

Japanese Catalogs

Japanese messages for many basic commands and applications are prepared. You can switch the languages by setting an environment variable.

Japanese Documentations and Manuals

A lot of Japanese documentats Vine Linux online manuals, Japanese documentations by JF Project and Japanese manual pages by JM Project and X Japanese Documentation Project, are involved,.

You can easily find a required information from the installed documents by using namazu, a search engine. The tknamazu, a GUI frontent of the namazu, starts by a click of the information mark in the dock of Window Maker.

XFree86-3.3.6

X Window System, XFree86-3.3.6, is chosen because of its stability. New graphic chips, such as NVIDIA GeForce 256/DDR and Intel i810/i815 works on it.

Japanese Fonts

Japanese fixed fonts (10,12,14,16,20,24 dot) are involved, and bold shape and italic shape are prepared for each size.

Five DynaFonts are also involved as scalable fonts on X Window. Of course you can utilize these fonts on pLaTeX, Tgif, Gimp,Netscape Communicator, and so on.

Printer setup

Many printers popular in Japan are supported by vine-printfilters. The printer configuration is easily done by the printtool.

Server environment

Vine Linux offers you sufficient packages to build WWW server (apache), mail server (postfix), ftp server (proftpd), samba server, openssh server...
